Fish as a model organism for testing adverse effects of chemicals and environmental contaminants

In last decades the production and use of drugs or pharmaceuticals is increasing. After application they find their way into the environment. In last decade researches started to explore their adverse effects on environment. Some pharmaceuticals, cytostatics drugs – used in cancer therapy, belong to highly hazardous compounds, thus is necessary to determine risk assessment for environment, potential effects of this chemicals on environment and establish criteria for monitoring of quality of water. This is the main goal of ecotoxicological studies. In this kind of studies researchers use sets of different tests. Nowadays the most popular test is the fish embryo test with zebrafish (Danio rerio), which has some advantages and disadvantages. Cytostatics and their residues are the main objective of two European projects: Cytothreat and Pharmas, united in Pharmacluster.
