Verica Garaj Vrhovac, PhD

Verica Garaj Vrhovac, PhD is a scientific advisor of the Mutagenesis Unit at IMI. Throughout the years, she has been acting as a chief-investigator of several projects including “ Biochemical effects of electromagnetic field“ (COST Action 244), “Development of infrastrucure for radiation and nuclear safety in the Republic of Croatia Task”, 5 “Health physical aspects of irradiated workers estimation of dose-risk relationships of accidents“, „Target sites in human genome connected with the process of cancerogenesis“, “ Ecogenetic research of mutagenic action with special attention on cell genome“ and „Biomarkers of the cell genome damage in ecogentic research“. VGV visited several foreign universities and institutes and participated in: Interregional Traning Course on Radiation protection, dealing with Cytogenetics in Biomedical Protection Problems, Tokyo, sponsored by IAEA; Traning course „New methods in genotoxicology“, Mol (Belgium) sponsored by COST Avtion 244. Her main field of interest concerns the investigation of mutations on chromosomal and molecular level induced by physical and chemical mutagens on animal and human cells. Results of her research are based on examination of cytogenetic and molecular biomarkers exposed to those genotoxic agents in vivo and in vitro. Her main field of interest cocnern the investigation of the acute and genotoxic properties of natural products derived from animals and plants. Other current reseach activities are the environmental toxicology of fresh water and pollution effects in water ecosystems. She is full professor of Radiobiology at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, vice president of Croatian Genetic Society, member of Executive Committe of Croatian Radiation Protection Society and was president of the Organizing Committee of European Environmental Mutagen Society (EEMS) as well as member of the Croatian National Correspondent of EEMS (see annex for references).
