IMI is a public research institution under the authority of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia. Core activities of the IMI are basic and applied research. Research involves mechanisms of adverse effects of chemical and physical agents on human and animal health. Main research fields of the Mutagenesis Unit, IMI department involved in the project, are: research on mutagenic and genotoxic effects of various physical factors and chemical agents on human and animal genome in vitro and in vivo. The current research interests concern mutagenic and cancerogenic effect in cultured cells and environmental toxicology of fresh water in human and animal models.. For ecotoxicogenetic investigations, different cytogenetic and molecular biomarkers are used for the direct and indirect determination of damage of genetic materials. Current research interests concern the development of new molecular biological techniques applicable in anticancer research and environmental toxicology such as the development of modified protocols for the comet assay.
